The Modern Leaving Persephone

INDICATIVE DISPLAY OF THE SCULPTURE I PROPOSE FOR THE 2023 ELEVSIS ARTISTIC PROGRAM, CULTURAL CAPITAL OF EUROPE (ECOC)

On the occasion of the ancient sculpture "The Leaving Persephone", I want to create a modern sculpture in marble with elements from the ancient statue, carving in some parts of the sculpture, industrial elements in embossed, like foreign bodies or wounds. Modern Persephone wants to escape from industrial development, which could be paralleled to the Hades of ancient times. The signs of industrialization that dominate the body of the city, will be evident in my sculpture.
Marble as a material was chosen because Greece is characterized as the country of marble and we find it throughout the range of history. He starred in architecture and sculpture in ancient Greece, until today. The choice of this particular sculpture, apart from the movement, was also chosen for its reference to Greek mythology. The project is a record of the history of the city and it reflects the evolution of culture and the coexistence of two different times, past and present. Modern society has reduced the ruins of the ancient world, but air pollution may have "intervened" in the ancient sculptures and finds of the archaeological site.

Having worked on the restoration and maintenance of monuments at the Ministry of Culture, I had been sensitized in the past, the sanctity of the city of Elefsina as well as the catastrophic consequences of its industrialization. Along with Joanna Neophytou had created a visual video art combined with performance.*
Art in all its forms arises from sensibilities, from the personal filtering of life and from profound needs of understanding and communication with the world. Art is not only the "beautiful", but also the messages you want to pass through it.
